Before Vehicles Arrive (Spring – Typically Mid-April to Mid-June)
Glacier’s iconic Going‑to‑the‑Sun Road opens to cyclists and pedestrians first—long before vehicles can enter—often from late April through mid‑June
This makes for an unforgettable, car‑free riding experience with sweeping views, towering snow walls, and peace you won’t get later in the season.
Key Highlights:
- Start from Apgar Village or Avalanche Trailhead, riding upward toward the snow‑cleared sections
- Riders often reach as far as Logan Pass, depending on plowing progress
- For up-to-date closure info, visit the NPS road status page or text GNPROADS to 333111
After the Road Opens to Vehicles (Late June – Early July Onward)
Once Glacier opens fully—typically mid‑June to early July—vehicle traffic resumes, making cycling more congested and time-sensitive
Important Biking Restrictions:
- From June 15 to Labor Day, bicycles are restricted on Going‑to‑the‑Sun Road between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., especially between Apgar and Sprague Creek, and Logan Creek up to Logan Pass
- Additionally, from June 16 through September 28, NPS prohibits uphill (eastbound) bicycling between 12 p.m.–6 p.m. from Apgar to Logan Pass, and downhill (westbound) from 3 p.m.–6 p.m. between Logan Pass and Apgar
- Plan early morning or evening rides to avoid restricted hours and heavy vehicle traffic.
